MEGAZEEN Convention Special #1
|The Inside Stuff|
This is one hysterical funny assortment of comics. The idea was that it would be a free giveaway at Wizard World Philly in 2003, where we had been asked to represent SALT. It was a last-minute idea and we put it together in less than a month. I think that's what made it so awesome- nobody had time to think, they had two weeks to slap something together.
"Do a comic about comic conventions." It was our first theme issue.
We went to Erica Well for the cover and she nailed it. Inside, Jesse Hamm opened with Free Sketches, whcih set the pace for the whole book. We got Todd Webb's permission to print a bunch of his con-related webcomics. There's a pin-up drawing in the book from John Hutchison- he actually gave us that sketch at the show, and we added it to the second printing.
Jamie Cosley explained Why I Don't Go to Comic Shows. I did a Johnny Crouton installment. Drew Pocza gave us a new Souled Out. There were lots more comics in here, from Ben Avery and Bud Rogers, As Kirby and Joel Klampert, David Rodriguez (whatever happened to that guy, he was AWESOME), Kevin Macdougal (him too!) and Dan Conner. Even Crossett himself did a zombie comic for the back cover.
Tom Hall turned in another Life of Fred. This was a good example of how I didn't get Megazeen in the early days. I remember not wanting to print the piece. There was a joke in there that I took as more suggestive than it was in reality. Nerves about our first big con had gotten the best of me. In the end, he and Joseph convinced me otherwise. I was way too high-strung back then.
In the end- the comic was the perfect giveaway, and before the end of the first day we were nearly depleted and had to give the books out sparingly. The feedback was terrific. It's a great example of how, gee, you can be a Christian and STILL have fun.
We gave away hundreds of them, to anyone that even looked at us.
You can see more about our trip to Philly here.
